Best Fries in NYC
Hey kids. Sorry for the lack of posts, but life has been insane. Now I finally have time to once again impart my NYC wisdom (or lack thereof) to you. This week finds me wanting to track down the best fries in NYC. There are two very important distinctions when talking about fries - skinny or "chips"? Skinny fries need no explanation. But "chips" are like steak frites, or the really thick cut fries that are only good with copious amounts of salt and malt vinegar.
Our first stop is A Salt and Battery. While this place was first mentioned in a past blog, the chips (fries) were not. If you want delicious, thick cut fries, you need to look no further than this downtown fish n' chips shop in Greenwhich Village. The best way to have them is a tie: either drowning in salt and malt vinegar (it should look like when the salt trucks are done plowing the street and you just get that salt on the side of the road), or smothered in curry sauce. Curry sauce is sacred among the British, as is malt vinegar and salt, so either way you choose to eat your "chips" it is guaranteed to be delicious!
Our next stop is one of my favorite midtown restaurants called Mustang Harrys. Located at 7th Ave between 29th & 30th Streets (2 blocks from Penn Station), this place does something to fries (skinny fries) that I have never seen done before. They have something on their menu called a "fry bar", where you can choose your topping choices and your dips. My fiance and I went here a couple of weeks ago, and we were so enamoured with the fries that we want to see if we can get them for our wedding cocktail hour! We chose the curry topping for our fries with a bleu cheese dip. Sounds weird, I know - but it was out-of-this-world delicious! The curry topping was actually more of a light oil, so you had the flavor without getting soggy fries. The bleu cheese dip was awesomely good with the curry - go figure. All in all, we loved the idea of a fry bar, and will be back as soon as possible!
